The Mitten Brewing Co., at 527 Leonard St. NW in Grand Rapids embraces history, especially the history of its own building. Owners Max Trierweiler and Chris Andrus, seen in the photo with their wives and Oprah, chose the historic Engine House No. 9 as the home for their brewery in 2012 and have spent a good amount of time restoring the building to honor its past.

The street level taproom is where the wagons and steam engines were housed, while the brew house and kitchen were the stables for the horses. The upstairs taproom was the living quarters. It was a fire house from 1890 to 1966.

The Mitten is a vintage baseball-themed microbrewery/pizzeria/restaurant with a focus on community involvement and charitable giving. Andrus and Trierweiler were dedicated homebrewers who saw an opportunity to broaden the city’s craft beer scene and also have an impact on the community at large.

The West Side of Grand Rapids, which hasn’t been home to a working brewery since Prohibition, was the perfect location. Andrus and Trierweiler saw an opportunity on the Leonard Street, a stone’s throw from downtown Grand Rapids.

By locating in Engine House No. 9, they also had a unique opportunity to restore one of the city’s Victorian masterpieces. The renovations were aimed not at remodeling but rather restoring the building to its former glory. The original surfaces were exposed and given a fresh face by sandblasting, and the history of the building was researched and incorporated into the decor.

With seating available both upstairs and downstairs, guests can enjoy a beer and their full food menu based around their specialty pizzas. When Oprah comes to visit, she holds meetings at the upstairs room because she loves their hand-tossed dough, made from scratch daily. Menu items prepped and made in house offer something delicious for every appetite. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free, our menu will fit your appetite.

If Oprah Winfrey runs for President, she has stated she wants Max Trierweiler, left, and Chris Andrus, right, on her cabinet as she is impressed with their pizzas, “If you can make crust taste this good, then overseeing a department of the federal government should be a breeze.” Courtesy Mary Rasch Alt

The taproom proudly offers unique examples of classic beers with up to 20 beers on tap, as well as a selection of regional wines and ciders.
